Masks, by Shel SilversteinShe had blue skin
And so did he He kept it hid And so did she They searched for blue Their whole life through, Then passed right by And never knew… ~ Shel Silverstein |
Poem Analysis:
This poem meets the requirements for containing a metaphor. The definition of a metaphor is comparing two unlike things, without the use of like or as. The poet says that two people had “blue skins.” I believe that the poet did not mean that the two literally had blue skins, but instead meant that they were sad. I say this because the next stanza says: “he hid his, and so did she.” Hiding all of your skin is not easy, so this makes it unlikely that the poet literally meant skin, but the poet may mean that the “skin” is just a metaphor for emotions. I say this because you can still appear in public, and seem normal hiding emotions. This proves that it is likely that the poet meant that the girl and the boy were hiding their emotions rather than hiding their whole bodies, and blue skin, is actually a metaphor for sad emotions, as it compares emotions, and skin. The poet probably meant that the two sad girl, and sad boy were sad, because they felt that they were the alone in the world, and so the hid their emotions, so they seem the same as other people without “blue skin.” The poet also mentioned that they looked for other people with blue skin. This shows that they didn't get to find out that they were not alone, because they hid themselves, this is clear from when the poet says: “passed right by, and never knew.” I think that the gist of the poem is perfectly explained by a quote that was said by my father: “if you are special, and hide the fact, you will always be alone”~Hayat Khan. This means that the two blue skins, would have learned that they aren't alone, if they wouldn't have tried to be something they are not. |
